EPDM belts are made of synthetic rubber, wear down gradually, and resist cracking much like a tire losing tread. That’s why technicians use plastic rib‑measurement tools to check the depth and shape of the belt ribs. The tool is placed into the grooves to see how well it fits. A good belt will hold the gauge snugly with very little movement. If the gauge sits low, rocks, or shows extra clearance, the ribs are worn and the belt can slip under load. This inspection should be treated the same way you would check tire tread depth, an objective measurement that tells you the true condition of the belt, even when it still looks good at a glance.
