When the brake pedal is released, what causes the caliper piston to retract back into the caliper body?
ANSWER: The Square Cut Seal
When the brakes are applied, brake fluid fills the space between the back of the caliper piston and the body of the caliper. This forces the caliper to move outward. The square cut seal is used to stop the brake fluid from escaping from behind the caliper piston. As the piston moves outward the seal stretches. As the pedal is released the pressure is no longer pushing on the back of the piston and the square cut seal returns to its original shape causing the piston to pull back slightly.
