Last month we asked this Tech question and invited you to share your answer. We value your expertise and want to thank everyone who participated!
Question: Why does a 3-phase brushless DC fuel pump have a longer service life than a conventional DC fuel pump?
Answer: 3-phase pumps tend to have a longer life because there are no brushes or commutators to wear out. 3-phase pumps also tend to have a longer life because there are no brushes or commutators to wear out. These pumps are also more efficient, using less than half the electric power of a standard DC motor and therefore generate less heat. 3-Phase DC pump motors also have a higher speed range and produce less electrical noise. When looking at service information you may see these pumps referred to as AC not DC pumps. Some manufacturers refer to these pumps as AC pumps because the control module pulses current through each of the three windings sequentially 120 degrees apart which simulates an AC voltage.
