Last month we asked this Tech question and invited you to share your answer. We value your expertise and want to thank everyone who participated!

Question:
What is the purpose of the check valve in a vacuum brake booster?

Answer: It maintains vacuum in the booster when there is none supplied. Allowing for a few assisted brake pedal applications. The brake booster is used to amplify the force applied to the brake pedal during stopping. The booster relies on atmospheric pressure on one side and vacuum on the other during braking. The vacuum is usually supplied by the engine but on some vehicles, may be provided by an electric pump. In case the engine was to stall or the vacuum pump was to fail, the check valve would hold vacuum in the booster allowing for a few assisted brake applications before the vacuum in the booster is depleted.
