2025 ACDelco Tech Challenge - January 2025

Last month we asked this Tech question and invited you to share your answer. We value your expertise and want to thank everyone who participated!

What does it mean when a vehicle is referred to as using a speed density system?

Answer: It means the car uses a MAP sensor to calculate the air entering the engine.
A MAP sensor is used to calculate the air pressure behind the throttle plate. Combining this information with the intake air temperature sensor and engine rpm the engine control computer calculates the air density as well as the amount of air entering the engine. The system is called speed density because it relies on the speed of the engine and the density of the air to calculate how much fuel to add to the engine.
