Question: What is the formula (R+M)/2 used for?
Answer: Calculate octane rating of gasoline - The formula determines the average of two different rating numbers to determine the octane rating of gasoline. The (R) represents the Research Octane Number (RON). To determine the RON, the fuel is tested under engine idle conditions with a low air temperature and slow engine speed. The (M) represents the Motor Octane Number (MON). To determine the MON the fuel is tested under more stressful conditions of higher air temperature and faster engine speed.
